Junior Years - Reception to Year 6

The best start for your son

Rostrevor College Junior Years has a long tradition of offering quality educational experiences for boys from Reception to Year 6 in the Edmund Rice Tradition. These are critical years, that form the basis of future development and growth - physically, socially, intellectually and spiritually.

Every boy from Reception to Year 6 is encouraged to strive to be his personal best. Our College motto Palma Merenti reminds us daily that rewards come to those who earn them. Together, we encourage, nurture and work to build respectful and trusting relationships between students, staff and parents.

Our experienced Junior Years teachers are committed to the development of each boy by implementing evidence-based, innovative learning experiences with a learning community that strives to offer a Liberating Education based on Gospel Spirituality within an Inclusive Community committed to Justice and solidarity.

Teaching and Learning

Our curriculum focuses on the academic, social, and emotional growth of each boy and provides an opportunity to foster self-assurance, responsibility, resilience, knowledge, skills, and capabilities that are relevant to the world of today and tomorrow.

Our contemporary teaching and learning approaches are centred around the Australian Curriculum and Crossways (Religious Education)

At Rostrevor College, we are committed to implementing evidence-based methods and approaches in all teaching and learning areas. Using a range of practices that research has demonstrated to have the greatest impact on student learning, teachers use quality evidence to establish where students are at in their leaning, decide on appropriate teaching strategies and interventions and monitor each boy's progress.

The Junior School experience at Rostrevor College allows boys to thrive and flourish while exploring their passions beyond the classroom. Students experience specialist teacher programs in music, Italian, Science and Physical education with an opportunity participate in an extensive range of co-curricular experiences.

Learning with SEQTA

Teachers, students and parents are connected in the Junior Years by our interactive teaching and learning system - SEQTA. Rostrevor College uses SEQTA for the online management of lessons, resources and reporting which are accessible to families from any device, anywhere at any time.?

SEQTA Engage allows families to have greater visibility across their son’s whole school life including:

  • Reports
  • Assessments
  • Teacher Feedback

iPad Program

Students in Year 3 - 6  take their device home daily to use digital curriculum materials, student collaboration tools, and to access the SEQTA student learning management system.

Student Wellbeing

The wellbeing of our boys is paramount in the Junior Years to ensure we nurture and develop young 'men for others'. Our boys recognise the need to serve others and are involved in various community activities.

We ensure our boys feel a sense of belonging by developing respectful relationships and encouraging empathy and resilience amongst peers.

A restorative approach is used to resolve conflict which involves restoring relationships and taking responsibility. Through our leadership programs, our boys are given opportunities to develop their skills through House, community and student-led activities. read more

Junior Years Co-Curricular

Rostrevor College boasts an exceptional and highly successful Co-Curricular program. All Junior boys, without exception, are involved in at least one winter and summer co-curricular activity designed to develop their strengths, build friendships and expose them to new challenges.

The Junior School offers a range of co-curricular activities for students from Reception including but not limited to:

Chess | Debating | Music | Tennis | Basketball | Football | Auskick | Soccer

Facilities

With large grounds available to explore, exercise and play, we believe our boys have space to grow and learn in an open environment.

Our Junior Years boasts excellent facilities including an Ideas Centre (library) and Gym. Boys have access to a playground, sandpits, garden, large oval, courtyard and basketball ring.

Boys have access to Science Labs weekly for hands-on experiments under the guidance of specialist staff as well as an Agricultural Farm and vegetable garden. Our Environmental Education Centre provides students with hands-on, interactive learning in environmental education and access to a wide range of native animals and reptiles

Spirituality

Our boys take part in regular prayer and reflection, where they are encouraged to think about their place in the world and how they may make a positive contribution to others. This is an integral part of a boy's personal spiritual growth in our Catholic school founded in the Edmund Rice tradition.

Our Religious Education program encourages them to explore their own spirituality through a diverse range of activities including meditation and community service. The Junior Years attend Chapel fortnightly where they are inspired to seek God in many ways and express love in generous service of others.
